It had been a long day, Lami had been up since dawn tending the garden and planning her dish for friendsgiving. Next on her list was checking stock for the upcoming opening of her new snack cart over in the farmers market, "but that can wait" thought Lami "its hot chocolate time and I can catch the coffee shop before closing if I hurry!" She pushed open the door and felt a bite in the air, Winter was definitely on the way! She reached back to grab her scarf from the coat rack, wrapping it around her neck as she ran for the gate.

It was quite a walk over to the coffee shop, but Lami never minded. The trees were bursting with colour, even now as the sun was slowly setting, and there was a fog in the air that told you snow was surely coming! As she got closer to the town she could smell the unmistakable scent of fresh baked bread wafting on the breeze. "Omgosh! The bakery must be open!" Hansel and Gretel's.. She had passed it many times and spent many mornings with her face pressed up against the glass staring at all the treats inside, but until now she had never managed to catch it while it was open.

Lami walked up to the door and pushed it open. The lights inside were bright, almost too bright and she had to squint a little while her eyes adjusted. Inside she could see a woman behind the counter, she turned as she heard the door push open. She seemed to sniff the air as her eyes locked onto Lami's and a huge but somehow unsettling grin spread across her face. "Chiiild" she whispered, her voice was soft but clear "Come in, come in out of the cold". She beckoned to Lami as she moved out from behind the counter. "I am Muriel, please feel welcome here any time" Lami's eyes widened a little at the sight of Muriel's hands. She had the longest nails Lami had ever seen, so long that they curled over and almost pointed back at her as she raised her hand. Lami took a few steps inside and suddenly Muriel was beside her, she seemed to float across the floor, or was it just the lights in here? Lami shook her head slightly, as if to clear her mind. "That cant be right?" She thought to herself, but it was getting late and she was tired.. Muriel placed her arm around Lami's shoulders and ushered her further inside. "Come, take a look. We have cakes and pastries.. Anything your heart desires" Lami looked at the display and Ooooh boy, was Muriel right! She had never seen so many sweet treats in one place before. Her mouth started to water as she tried to decide what she wanted.

"You know, I dont do this often but maybe if you tell me your favorite snack I could whip up something special just for you" Muriel's hand moved to Lami's arm as she talked, her fingers curled and she pinched at Lami's arm "You feel a little thin, my child. Let me make you something to put some meat on those bones" Lami looked up, she felt dizzy all of a sudden and the air felt thick around them. She opened her mouth to speak but could only whisper.. "pretzels" Muriel let out a little laugh, tilted her head and Lami followed her gaze. As if by magic, a basket of pretzels had appeared in her hand. They smelled divine and Lami stood on her tippy toes, looking at them. Her hand reached out to take one "Yes, thats it dear. Eat up, take two! Three even! We must fatten you up"

Suddenly, a huge clatter outside made Lami jump. She shook her head again, becoming more aware of her surroundings. She could feel the heavy air lifting and Muriel clawing at her arm. She was laughing more now, an almost crazed sound making Lami feel sure she needed to get out of there fast! "I uh, I have to go! I can hear my aunt calling for me!" She turned and almost tripped as she ran for the door. She could hear Muriel behind her, rustling and calling "wait my dear, I just want to give you something for later!" Lami yanked the door open and fell out on the the pavement, she let out a loud yelp and took off towards the beach. She only looked back once, Muriel was standing outside the store waving a basket and cackling into the air, Lami ran like she had never ran before! One thing is for sure, she wouldnt be taking snacks from strangers again anytime soon!
